Chapter 1
Absolute Location
An exact point or place on earth.
She found the absolute location she was looking for on the map.
Relative Location
Where one place is compared to another.
The relative location on the map wasn't too far apart.
Distortion
A change in shape or size of a place on a map.
The distortion on the map made it clearer to understand.
Map Projection
A way of showing the round earth on a flat surface.
The map projection made it possible to make an in depth map.
Chapter 2
Climate
The general state of the weather in a certain area.
The climate in California was changing with the seasons.
Economic Activity
The economy in general- buying and selling goods, and marketing.
The economic activity in New York is very high.
Landform
An aspect of the earth that has a distinct shape. Such as a mountain range.
The landform marked an important place on the map.
physical feature
A natural aspect on the earth such as a river or lake.
the great lakes are a physical feature on the earth.
Population density
The approximate amount of people that live in a specified area.
The population density in New York is bigger than Kansas
region
A certain area that is represented by its natural or cultural features.
California is in the West region of the united states.
Thematic Map
A map with a certain theme- Population, economic activity, etc..
The thematic map showed the vegetation in africa.

All the greenery and plants in an area
the vegetation in my backyard is getting overgrown.
Chapter 3
Ecumene
A place that is well adapted for living. Or a populated area.
If an area isn't in the ecumene, its most likely no suited for permanent settlement.
Plural Society
A society where people hold onto their beliefs and demonstrate them.
The plural society held people of many different cultures.
Rural
Areas that are remote, or not close to cities.
The rural society was very close. They helped each other with everyday tasks.
Urban
An area that's populated, and very common.
New York is an urban area,
Chapter 19
Hydroelectric potential
The power that is generated by natural flowing water.
The Hydroelectric potential supplied power for a variety of places.
Parennial irrigation
An irrigation or watering system that supplies year- round watering.
The plants stay alive year- round because of the Parennial irrigation system.
River basin
The areas that are drained by the main river.
The river basin was left after all the water drained into the main river.
Water cycle
The rotation of water. Being evaporated by the sun and projected back down by rain clouds.
The water rotation is what produced clouds and rain.
Chapter 20
Desertification
The process of an area becoming a desert by getting dryer.
The desertification had already begun by the time they re-visited the campsite.
Drought
When an area or community is deficient of water because of the lack of rainfall.
The drought caused the people to have to take shorter baths and shower to save water.
Marginal land
Land that is not ideal or good for growing crops.
Growing on marginal land is not a good idea if you want your plants to grow.
Pastoral Nomads
A group that moves with their animals to search for water and pasture.
The pastoral nomads kept their herd with them no matter where they went, in search of water.
Chapter 24
Crude oil
Petroleum as it comes out of the ground.
Crude oil created many jobs for people in the area.
Nonrenewable resource
A resource that takes so long to form that its hard to be renewed.
Since oil takes many years to form, it is a nonrenewable resource
Oil reserves
oil that is still in the ground but isnt being used.
Oil reserves are left unused for many years.
Renewable source
A resource that never runs out, or is reproduced as quick as its used.
an example of a renewable resource would be energy from a windmill.
Chapter 26
Environmental degradation
When natural resources are used for human resources. This can destroy animals habitats, and more.
When the lumberjacks cut down the trees, they were degradating the environment.
Groundwater
Water that lies beneath the earth.
the groundwater supplied water for the well.
Salinization
Salt or soil in water.
The salinization caused the water to clump up.
Water stress
A condition caused by a lack of clean or fresh water.
the water stress was causing people to become parched.
